In a development that saw the internet united in bashing the super-villain movie, the 2017 Oscar for makeup and hairstyling went to ‘Suicide Squad’, even though it was widely derided by critics. Accepting the statuette was Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It’s unusual for a movie like Suicide Squad — which got a torrent of critical drubbings — to be recognized at the Academy Awards. The other comic-book movie in line for a possible Oscar, Marvel’s ‘Dr. Strange’, was nominated for Best Visual Effects, but lost to ‘The Jungle Book’.
I personally liked Suicide Squad, or at least parts of it. It had its problems, some of them super-obvious, but hair and make-up certainly aren’t part of all that. Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn were brilliant, with ol’ Mister J deserving of far more screen time than he got. But I digress…
In his acceptance speech, Bertolazzi noted that he was an Italian immigrant and said, “This is for all the immigrants.” He also talked about the pressure of bringing superheroes to life: “It’s an incredible pressure. With the pressure you can do nothing. You have to use your experience. You forget the pressure, you forget the studio, you just do what you can do.”
This was the first Oscar win for the trio of Bertolazzi, Gregorini, and Nelson. Suicide Squad was up against Star Trek Beyond and A Man Called Ove.
